• Understand and learn the escape routes in your area.
  • Insure that you know where the evacuation shelters are located.
  • Keep a good supply of water, non-perishable foods.
  • Make sure all loose items are picked up outside and around your property.
  • Protect doors and windows.
  • Never use candles. Use flashlights, spotlights, etc.
  • Make sure all emergency equipment is in working order. Flashlights, generators, etc.
  • Understand and know your communities plan for hurricanes.
  • Have a First Aid Kit available.
  • Make sure you have a good supply of all prescribed medicines on hand in case you cannot get your medicines refilled right away.
  • Be observant of dangers outside the area. Downed power lines, dangerous objects, lying around and in the water, downed trees, etc.
  • Do not try to drive through flood waters.
  • Make sure you have extra cash on hand.
  • Fuel all vehicles and motorized equipment. Have extra fuel available.
  • Put valuables in a safe place. Photos, keepsakes, insurance documents, etc. (Preferably a strongbox)
  • Monitor the hurricane for official forecasts.
  • If you stay in your home, stay in a room where there are no windows or fewer windows.
  • Cooperate with officials when instructions are relayed.
